An alternative way is 240 x 5 =1,200 because 100 divided by 20 is 5 and then you multiply it by the increase

For anyone still unsure: the 20% increase = £240, so 10% = £120, and 100% = £1,200 (that's the original price). The £960 some people got comes from subtracting 240 from the wrong total — easy mistake under exam pressure!

An alternate method and one students may find easier is to recognise 20% is 240 so 10% is 120. Therefore 100% must be 10 times that so £1200.

You don’t gotta do anything like that it’s a foundation ahh question just do if 20 % is 240 so 10% is 120 so make it 100% 120x10=1200 this is easy 😂

The kind of question we're teaching in year 6 for SATs 🥴

There's very, very little chance a Foundation tier student would do it this way though. If they were comfortable enough with decimals and dividing by them, they would be doing Higher.

I'm in ks3 this is GCSE foundation? Seems easy or I'm getting arrogant.

My slow self would write the equation exactly how I read it. Would get there eventually 🤣P*1.2 = P + 240.

I think my students would do 10% = £120, so 100% = £1200

Is this really a gcse foundation math question?

Would it not be £960 (since the 20% represents an extra £240 added to the original, so you would need to subtract £240 from £1,200, to get the original value before the increase)? Or am I just over complicating the maths?!
