Today we are with Nina Harris, a Tisch student studying drama at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, who has spent her whole life in New York, experiencing it through the pursuit of art and the people around her.

“I love my city so much, I could talk about New York forever” she says. “It’s always changing, and it’s changed a lot since I’ve grown up here. What I hope never changes is New York’s haven status for people in search of a home.”

What she loves most is how the constant proximity to all different walks of life makes empathy and compassion inescapable. “You can’t really get away from it because of how dense the city is. You’re always in contact with other people’s lives. That’s what makes you a good New Yorker: the ability to empathize with everyone you are constantly interacting with. That’s what holds the city together.”

Regarding the pursuit of art, “I think everyone should practice as well as consume all forms of art as often as possible. Even if you feel like giving yourself the title of artist is too pretentious for right now, still recognize that you have artistic capabilities, whatever they be. And continue to practice them. The more we have practicing artists from all walks of life, even to the smallest degree of finance bros taking up photography, we can continue to have critical thinking, UN-herd-like masses of active individuals part of a beautiful self generating and prospering community.”

Lastly, on improving, Nina beleives the need to stay unsatisfied for an artist is huge, “you should not be satisfied with the work you put out there, stay insatiable and comfort yourself in knowing you can do more. My teacher said, ‘You should hate the artist you were yesterday, so you can strive for the artist you’ll be tomorrow.’ Stay craving new things, bold things, things that scare you and free you.”
