Trying oil paint again for the first time in 15(?) years. Stormy weather seemed appropriate for that! 😅

During my recent visit to Sri Lanka with @minesadvisorygroup , I had the privilege of meeting Victoria. When she was 18, she found an interesting object lying on the ground while she was out collecting firewood. She didn’t know what it was but her curiosity got the better of her. She wanted to open it, and find out what might be inside. Her first instinct was to bite it… nothing happened. She threw it on the ground and tried to kick it. Again, nothing happened. She lifted it into her lap and sat down to exert some pressure on what she thought was the lid. She pushed her upper hand firmly into the object to try and release it. And then she woke up in hospital: missing two hands, part of her face and having suffered internal injuries to the area near her heart. Victoria’s is a remarkable story of resilience and hope. But her story also shows why this work matters. Landmines and unexploded weapons can remain hidden for decades, putting children at risk as they go about their everyday lives. The land must be cleared, so that no other child has to face what Victoria did. Read my full reflections on my visit to Sri Lanka on MAG’s website. 📸 @avani.rai
10 years ago today, Sabrina Carpenter released ‘EVOLution.’ Sabrina Carpenter's second album almost had a different lead single. 'Smoke and Fire' was originally meant to introduce 'EVOLution,' but she cut it, saying the evolution came after it. Hollywood Records released the 10-song, 33-minute dance-pop record on October 14, 2016, a departure from the folk-pop and teen pop of her debut 'Eyes Wide Open.' Carpenter co-wrote every track except 'Thumbs,' which Priscilla Renea and Steve Mac wrote. Producers included Ido Zmishlany, Steve Mac, Jimmy Robbins, Ryan Ogren, Rob Persaud, Halatrax, DJ Daylight, and Nonfiction. The rollout began with the lead single 'On Purpose' on July 29, 2016. Promotional singles followed, with 'All We Have Is Love' opening the pre-sale on September 23 and 'Run and Hide' arriving a week later. 'Thumbs' came out as a promo single on October 7 and was released as the second official single in January 2017. A U.S. Evolution Tour ran from October 18 to December 13, 2016. 'EVOLution' debuted at number 28 on the Billboard 200 with 11,500 copies sold in its first week, her highest chart position at that point. Critics noted her maturity and growth, and ANDPOP praised a mature side that experimented with techno beats and an indie but synth-driven take on pop. She began working on her next album soon after, and 'Singular: Act I' in 2018 became the first where every song was co-written by her. #sabrinacarpenter #music #popculture #reels
