👩‍🌾 You think you’re learning how to grow vegetables. You’re actually learning patience, leadership, discipline, how to push past what you thought were your limits and how to make decisions when no one else can make them for you. Farming will humble you fast.

💸 Farming is romantic online. In real life, it’s spreadsheets, risk, and betting on yourself. Every decision has financial weight. And when you start with your own savings and a family loan (like I did), you feel every loss more personally. Weather, pests, market turnout, equipment breakdowns — it’s not abstract. It’s real. You learn very quickly that growing food and managing risk are sort of the same job. And that responsibility grows you up fast.

💗 Community is everything. I would argue that the small scale farmer should focus on community rather than scale. Think CSA members. Market customers. Your farm crew. Neighbors. Other farmers. You cannot build something like this alone. The farm survives because people choose to believe in it.

🥕Growth might be slower than you want AND faster than you expect. The growing season feels endless. Then suddenly you look back and realize you have done so much. You’ve built systems. You’ve fed families. Progress on a farm is measured in seasons, not days.

🌱It changes you.You become more resilient. More resourceful. More grounded. But also softer. More grateful. More aware of how connected everything is.

So happy for you and what you’ve built. There is truly something spiritual about growing food…a true connection to Goddess. And to think you’re in my neck of the woods in McHenry County❤️
