⛵️🌞Summer means sailing in the Huon Valley. With both river and sea flowing through the lives of its inhabitants, and summer usually a quieter time for orchardists, there’s a strong sailing culture here.

Julian and Rachel have been sailing for three seasons now. We’re lucky to have the Port Esperance Sailing Club, with instructors and support crew who all volunteer their time and energy to teach and share the joys and tribulations of this sport.

We didn’t quite manage to co-ordinate with Port Cygnet Sailing Club for the usual sail away weekend. So today PESC had a little sail from the club across to Kent Beach. It was a bit of a long slog over, with Julian and Rachel struggling to start with but persevering to the end.

Then a picnic lunch. a natter, and some beach cricket, before we sailed back. Our two swopped the Sabots for the Optimists so their fellow junior sailors could take a turn. The wind picked up a bit, and it was choppy out, so there was a capsize! But Gilly managed to get it righted and then she plodded back with it alongside.

So all on all, success!

We love what sailing teaches the kids. Independence, decision making, self-confidence, perseverance, discomfort even! Our two may not be hooked on it, but we want them to have this ability and resilience in their library of life skills.

(I fear my dream of lounging on a yacht with a cocktail on the Croation coast while my kids work the sails is just a pipe-dream!? 😜)

This is wonderful! It sounds like you have such a great sailing community around you. We're counting down to summer so we can get back out on the water too. I just wish our local sailing club had the same welcoming vibe yours seems to have!
