Growing our own food and a family @ourmatesfarm in the Huon Valley, Tasmania...
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
🖤My dad passed away this morning.

It was unexpectedly sudden. The kids and I only left him on Wednesday afternoon. He took ill Thursday, seemed reasonable if still unwell yesterday, but then took a turn for the worse in the early hours this morning.

He was an amazing person, who loved his family and would do anything for them. He was an incredible family doctor who took care of multiple generations for over half a century.

He was quiet (unless he had a few drinks in him!), not a talker but loved to write his thoughts. He loved to learn, he never stopped educating himself as a healthcare professional, including alternative treatments like acupuncture.

He always dabbled at being a gentleman farmer through the years, so he loved visiting and hearing about what we were doing as farmers in Tassie. And he would be quick to thrash us at mahjong.

I am very glad that we’d taken these school holidays to be with him. It’s a day’s journey either end, and we had only a week there, but it was worth it - you never know what the future holds, so we have learned to never put off seeing our loved ones.

We’ll all be flying to Malaysian Borneo for the funeral this coming week. As are a lot of our other extended family members, so it will be good to be among those who loved him too.

Love you to bits, Pa. Going to miss you so much. I’m sad that you won’t get to see our two grow up, but glad you knew them for the time you did, and that they knew you.🖤 by @coreen.ung

Happy Father’s Day to this guy! And all the other dads out there, doing the best they can, even when other responsibilities are clamouring for attention. I wouldn’t do this parenthood gig without Matt (after all, he’s the one who got us into this!😆). We can make it through, I promise! #fathersday #toallthedads taken in Our Mates' Farm by @coreen.ung

⛵️🌞Summer means sailing in the Huon Valley. With both river and sea flowing through the lives of its inhabitants, and summer usually a quieter time for orchardists, there’s a strong sailing culture here.

Julian and Rachel have been sailing for three seasons now. We’re lucky to have the Port Esperance Sailing Club, with instructors and support crew who all volunteer their time and energy to teach and share the joys and tribulations of this sport.

We didn’t quite manage to co-ordinate with Port Cygnet Sailing Club for the usual sail away weekend. So today PESC had a little sail from the club across to Kent Beach. It was a bit of a long slog over, with Julian and Rachel struggling to start with but persevering to the end.

Then a picnic lunch. a natter, and some beach cricket, before we sailed back. Our two swopped the Sabots for the Optimists so their fellow junior sailors could take a turn. The wind picked up a bit, and it was choppy out, so there was a capsize! But Gilly managed to get it righted and then she plodded back with it alongside.

So all on all, success!

We love what sailing teaches the kids. Independence, decision making, self-confidence, perseverance, discomfort even! Our two may not be hooked on it, but we want them to have this ability and resilience in their library of life skills.

(I fear my dream of lounging on a yacht with a cocktail on the Croation coast while my kids work the sails is just a pipe-dream!? 😜)

🏕️⛲️ Making the most of our 2 night camping trip to Mt Field, with the foray into Russell Falls’ glow worm ghetto after a short rest after our epic hike day! We thought they would want to just chillax after showers, but the kids were keen.

In the morning (Tue), we packed up camp, but went back into Mt Field NP to go for a short (about 2ish hours) three waterfall circuit - Russell Falls / Horseshoe Falls / Lady Barron Falls, and the Talk Trees walk.

It was lovely walk in the shady forest paths, as it was much warmer today! (We’d been super lucky to have hit yesterday’s exposed mountain hike in cloudy conditions.) We all definitely felt yesterday’s efforts on the legs today!

On the return drive, we stopped in at the Salmon Ponds for lunch (all day sweet and savoury pancakes!). It’s been a few years since we’ve been there, so it’s fun to check out the super fat trout and salmon in the waterway courses, throw them pellets, and getting splashed.

All in all, a great short getaway for the fam. So glad to have the opportunity over summer to spend this time together.

🏕️⛰️We took a little trip to Mt Field NP for a camping trip with the kids over the school holidays. It’s our first trip to Mt Field properly (we popped in briefly for Russell Falls after Railtrack Riders with the Jensens earlier this month).

Staying at Left of Field Campground, it’s been perfect for a relaxing stay, with Matt popping down the road for a spot of trout fishing, a proper hike around Lake Dobson & the Tarn Shelf, & explore locally.

The Tarn Shelf circuit is the longest hike we have done with the kids. (Our last long hike was up to Hartz peak probably 2 years ago.) Today was 16km around some lovely scenery, with 590m of ascent, and 6 hours of footfall.

Icecreams well-deserved. A steak and pasta dinner. A good sleep earned.

Thanks for the birthday love, peeps 🥰😍😘

My 30yo self living the London life (who was actually too hungover at my own bday to drink anything, thanks to Pari Barman Vinden’s birthday the night before 😂) would lmao at the thought that my 48yo self spent a birthday driving 3h each way for their kids’ State cross country, in the cold drizzly Symmons Plains raceway. But - #mumlife!

All the kids ran their hardest today! From all across the state, it was a pleasure to watch and cheer them on.

Thanks Kate Brown for running the Huon&Channel marquee, being there so early, and making sure everyone knew what was what! 👏 taken in Symmons Plains Raceway by @coreen.ung

💇🏻‍♀️On April 4th, Ray is sacrificing her locks for the World’s Greatest Shave. It’s taken her four years to grow out from her last Sinead O’Connor styling and she’s ready for a comeback tour! Any donations you make would be so greatly appreciated. The link is in my bio or type in https://bit.ly/4kssLmf. Thank you on her behalf! taken in Lutruwita / Tasmania by @coreen.ung

The February round-up!

It felt like we were back a nanosecond from Malaysia before it was all hands on deck at home.

The kids got back to school the week after we returned. We attended the final JackJumpers game for 24/25, we will miss having them occupy our summer! We were so luck to share an amazing meal with friends @anchovy338’s residence @fatpigfarm.

There have been truly hot days of summer and visits to the beach to cool down. An unprecedented dry warm run of days this season makes it almost feel like summer is endless.

The Huon Valley Little Athletics three week round of Championships has created the need for me to purchase a medals wall display for the kids. Super proud of their efforts and the supportive little aths community.

Junior sailing at the @pescdover has been going strong, with the joint adventure weekend away with the @portcygnetsailingclub turning out to be the most memorable yet (hint: lightning flashes at 5am can be super useful!).

Multitudinous piglets have been born and I spend So Much of my time with them. (If you don’t follow us @ourmatesfarm, piglet time is Me Time.) We’ve had family friends and tour visit the farm - perfect timing as the orchard looks amazing this time of the year with all the ripening apples on the trees. DarcyDarcyDarcy was returned to home ground and no doubt misses @laurawhalland like crazy.

And now it is March - our main season picking begins next week. So if we say no to invitations to catch up, it’s not because we wouldn’t love to, it’s because we’re a little focused on the culmination of all Matt’s hard work for the last 7-8 months. We’ll have little breaks in between varieties, so you may find us popping our head out every so often.

January ‘25 roundup - Part Tiga (3) 🇲🇾

At the start of Jan week 3, from Tokyo Matt flew home to Tas, while the kids and I flew to Malaysian Borneo, to spend time with my folks and have Chinese New Year together.

We’re staying at one of my two aunties’ house (she’s away), which the kids love as she has a great pool that they basically live in. Every day we take the short drive over to my other aunty’s house with whom my parents live, to have lunch and hang around for dinner. She lives by the beach - also awesome as we get to look for shells! (And Matt is now 🤦‍♂️)

Unfortunately the family time and reunions (with my brother Casey flying in from NZ to also spend some time with the folks) were hampered by our 82yo dad taking a bad fall on Wednesday night and breaking his hip. With a hospital overnighter then an ambulance-ferry to a bigger hospital later, we had changed all plans!

Casey rerouted to KK, I left the kids and flew over the next day. And we’ve spent the last few days sitting by our dad’s bed. He had his surgery on Monday, which was a success. But there’s now the hard road back to recovery, with lots of restrengthening and physio exercises.

The kids have been great, living life parental supervision-free! Luckily my aunty has been shuttling them back and forth, taking them out to sushi!, and being the stand-in for me, with nightly Facetime video calls for me to check-in.

I flew out Tue arvo, as my dad was being transferred out of post-surgery ICU back to the ward room. Casey is still with him, and changed his travel plans to stay a little longer. It was bad it happened but I am glad we could be here to help!

Chinese New Year eve dinner was a bit more subdued than we’d planned (with my dad and brother still in KK!), but having some family together is still a balm.

We leave this evening for the long 3 flights home, from this island off an island (Labuan-Borneo) to our home island off an island (Tasmania-Australia). Can’t wait to be home, though I may have to come back soon enough to help out between aunty-travels.

January ‘25 roundup - Part Ni (2) 🇯🇵

We left for Japan at the end of the first week. It was a long trip out to Niseko - flights from Hobart (delayed, cutting it fine…) to Melbourne to Tokyo, overnighting near Haneda airport, flight to Sapporo Hokkaido, <4h bus to Niseko, to flopping onto the beds of our luxurious penthouse accom in Hirafu!

And it being our first time to Niseko, we hadn’t quite got our heads around the logistics of four separate-run ski fields on the mountain. We were staying in the Grand Hirafu area and the kids’ ski school was one over to the left at Niseko Village. Between organising rental gear that first morning then strapping straight into ski gear to gondola and ski/skate across, we missed their first morning lesson 😅.

We got the hang of it in the end! A ski over to warm up every morning, then drop the kids off to skischool, @matthewtack & I skiing our butts off, meet them for lunch, drop them back for the first 3 days, skiskiski, pick them up in the arvo, ski together a bit. Day 4 was a family ski together day. Days 5-7 were morning skischool only.

Matt and I managed to ski all four fields (Annapuri scouted out only very briefly!), and we all really enjoyed Hanazono. The kids, like us, are pretty keen on skiing through trees (tho I did cop a very nasty bruise on my right arm by not ducking a big broken branch fast enough!). We think we finally got a handle on it, as first timers, before we had to leave! Matt and I had super-FOMO of the fresh powder falling the day we left.

Four days in Tokyo, staying at a cute little narrow house, exploring temples gardens palace, Japanese icons (Pokemon, Nintendo, Godzilla!), practising samurai ninja skills, looking out from the heights of Skytower, bowling & arcading, and eating our weight in tasty Japanese food.

We’ll be back again Niseko (note to self: pack a shit ton warmer ski gear), and Japan. Maybe sans-kids lol!
