7 months agoFun fact, the lead weights inside the weight pockets on either side of the window (should) be stamped with the actual weight of the weight; after the sash was glazed, the carpenter would determine how heavy it was and would cut the lead weight to whatever length gave him half that amount. Back then, the glass was fairly thin and hand rolled, making the infamous “wavy” appearance. Today, when we restore these sashes, and if new glass is necessary, additional weight must be added to accommodate for the thicker, heavier glass. There’s also a very unique method of determining the length of the sash cord needed such that the weight does not bottom out before the sash is all the way up!
7 months agoThis building still has its original windows. The building is being preserved primarily by one person-a museum curator and preservationist who is also in charge of a huge project to preserve a major historic building on the ellipse. The co op owners are very lucky to have this person living in their building.
7 months agoI loved looking at that building. I lived at The Brittany in front of it at 16th at U, New Hampshire Ave, V streets and my bay window faced towards it.
7 months agoMy wife's parents lived there in tge 60's. We almost bought there but no dogs policy back in 2000.
