Berlin and Heidelberg, Germany. Florence, Italy. Agadir and Marrakesh, Morocco. 🇩🇪🇮🇹🇲🇦

I went on a mini-sabbatical abroad and it was nothing short of a transformative experience. Before this summer I was working and studying nonstop and decided to take a break centered around some extracurricular professional development. Only it had to be somewhere far away from my day to day. And since I needed to spend some very overdue time visiting my intercontinental close friends, a plan easily fell into place ✨

I returned with renewed direction for my own graduate and professional research in Earth and planetary sciences. I’m proud of my work and how it helps the people, plants, and critters on this planet and I strongly believe this kind of work should continue. Unplugging to reflect on this simple truth may have been the only time scheduling a life revelation ever worked 😄

Oh, and a cool bonus: I learned how to surf in a new continent around my bday 🌊🏄‍♀️😎🤙

First pic: At the Museum of Galileo Galilei in front of a giant armillary sphere. It’s next door to the Uffizi Galleries, def recommend!

sharing this as a DC resident and as a lover of space exploration. it’s a hard time to be either right now as we watch profoundly devastating changes happening in real time.

looking back at videos to assemble this post helped reinvigorate what it is I’m fighting for both with my professional colleagues and with my friends and neighbors here in DC. even with everything that’s going on… I wouldn’t live anywhere else in the US and this is why. DC is home.

a tribute to the good parts of the last few months 🌸

when putting this together I realized a few things:

- seasons are a trip. snow is lovely. flowers are beautiful. I can pass on the humidity. I love exchanging cherry blossom and magnolia progress pics with my pals all over the world (namely Paris and Kyoto—waving at @jamesmontgomery and @hirokochujo 😊🌸)

- it’s pretty rad to see some of the science you help process and/or map of Earth and other planets made into art and displayed at iconic American cultural institutions.

- the Smithsonian Museums and The Kennedy Center are some of this country’s most important cultural treasures and we must protect them as much as we can.

- randomly seeing your profession’s “forefathers” in rapid succession feels like meaningful coincidences. I was able to start my planetary science career at Arizona State University entirely due to Ron Greeley’s (and partly Matt Golombek’s) work years before me. way before that, like many others, Bill Nye ignited a love for science for me as a kid. and after many years, he has now taught me as an adult how to explain this to decision makers so that a path to science doesn’t end with me.

- I am definitely a DC local now. look at all the Mall pics on this slide deck 😅 I stayed up til 3 am to take a blood moon eclipse pic in front of the National Air and Space Museum bc I’m that nerd. I had a meeting at NIST at 10am.

- and the Healy Hall pics—I’ve been very happy with the Georgetown community and frankly even pleasantly surprised with how they’ve been managing the past few months. despite the strange timing to be in grad school I am grateful to be a Hoya.

while many things in the present and the future are uncertain, I hope I get to stay here a while. taken in Washington D. C. by @planet.rojas

Last week was monumental — I gave my first conference talk! And of course it had to be at the biggest conference a geoscientist can attend, #AGU24 (which brought 30,000 other geoscientists to DC!). I presented results from my NASA SCoPE grant project where I came up with a model for culturally inclusive Earth and planetary science engagement for scientists and informal educators.

I also spent some time in the NASA booth talking shop and proudly representing the PACE mission in the oceanography and atmospheric sciences areas. If you got a NASA 2025 calendar, check out April’s image! taken in Washington Convention Center by @planet.rojas

Holding the keys to the NASA PACE Mission!

PACE has officially “handed the keys” from the commissioning team to the Earth Science Mission Operations group and of course we had a “key ceremony” to celebrate yet another great mission milestone. Here I’m representing the Science Data Segment, which is responsible for the science operations of the spacecraft. I work with scientists and engineers to schedule spacecraft observations and I make sure scientists get the hyperspectral data they need for their oceanography and atmospheric research.

The key was made for fun using leftover spacecraft hardware that would have otherwise gone in the trash (or indefinite storage). It was very sharp and fresh from the machine shop. I’m certain I work with some of the most creative, kind, and talented people in the world who think up of this stuff. taken in NASA Goddard Space Flight Center by @planet.rojas

Hey Hoyas, I’m joining the family!

I’ll be taking a dip into environmental pollution research (aerosols!!) combined with policy in the Environmental Metrology and Policy program at Georgetown University. My journey in science will continue in software engineering and science operations at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, which is already a HUGE wish granted. This opportunity to become a better scientist in the lab and contributing to more effective policymaking addressing climate change is another dream come true that I couldn’t pass up!

A huge shout out to my family, friends, and colleagues who have consistently shown up for me to support my intimidatingly ambitious goals, especially when they’re a little insane. I would not be here without your support! There’s plenty unknowns ahead as I start a path completely new to me and most folks around me. But thanks to y’all, I feel confident in this leap of faith. Thank you!!

Side note: if anyone has leads to research grants and scholarships for underrepresented minorities in STEM and/or Earth and space science/policy, please send them my way. I will take all the help I can get! taken in Georgetown University by @planet.rojas
