Moving to a big kid bed is a huge milestone and one parents ask about all the time. 🛏️

A simple rule of thumb: if your toddler is tall or strong enough to climb out of the crib, it’s time to transition.

Before making the switch, make sure you have time to stay consistent for about a week. Some toddlers will stay in bed once you explain the routine, while others will test their new freedom and wander out. Consistency is key.

To help the transition go more smoothly, remember BIG BED.:

B – Build excitement: read books about big kid beds and let them help choose bedding
I – Introduce a lovey: a stuffed animal or blanket can add comfort
G – Go for it: once you start, don’t switch back
B – Bedtime routine stays the same: same routine, just in the new bed
E – Encourage good sleep habits with praise, hugs, or small rewards
D – Don’t forget safety: bed rails, a low mattress, toddler-proof the room, and consider a gate if needed

Take the spring out and put mattress down onto the floor. That's what we did with our son, even on low setting he was able to climb out so had to do it to the floor and he hasn't climbed out once yet

@drtanyaaltmann Any tips for a 2y/o who wanders out of the big bed and falls asleep elsewhere in the room? He consistently falls asleep under the curtains on his window. He’s doing it so often it’s become a routine and idk how to get him to break it!

We have a mesh tent for the grandkids. In addition to the sides and top, it has a bottom. The whole mattress fits in it. They call it a fort, and the littles actually like it. 🙏🥰

I will never forget my son’s second birthday. He had never shown us any inclination to climb out. We had his second birthday party and he went down for his nap. Mom and I were sitting there drinking a glass of wine and we heard this horrible thud and a cry. He had tried to climb out and fallen. He was OK, but we went shopping for a toddler bed that afternoon. Now he is a father himself, and his wife posted video of their daughter, climbing out, all proud of herself. Their crib actually converts to a toddler bed, lowered and no side rail. They like it so they bought a crib like that for her brother when he was born. He’s about ready to be moved for his own safety.
