Ready to push your pottery further? Join Colleen Riley (@eurekapots) and Donovan Palmquist (@masterkilnbuilders) this spring at Starworks for Assembled Forms, Fearless Glazing—an immersive five-day workshop designed for artists ready to deepen their making and glazing practice.

Colleen Riley: Fearless Glazing

Do you panic when you step into the glaze room? Are you afraid to experiment beyond the single dip method of glazing? This hands-on session will arm you with knowledge and tools needed to glaze with confidence. We’ll explore a range of glazing techniques based on building layers. Techniques include slips, engobes, brushing, wax resist, stencils, bottle application, and incising. Bring 10–15 simple pots (cups, vases, flat pieces) to glaze for a cone 10 firing in the Starworks gas kiln. We’ll have time to analyze the results at the end of the week. Even if you don’t fire cone 10, these techniques can be applied to any temperature or atmosphere. Be prepared for happy surprises – and epic failures! In the end you will be armed with confidence to continue your surface exploration.

Donovan Palmquist: Assembled Forms

Donovan has been a potter and kiln builder for 50 years. His approach to his distinctively formed work is influenced by his deep understanding of design, engineering, and building. He will demonstrate making vessels created with thrown, altered, hand-built, and assembled parts. While the kiln cools, we will make vessels for pouring and storage. Donovan will also demonstrate using slips and adding texture through carving on leatherhard work, specifically designed to enhance surfaces in atmospheric kilns.
