Hello, Instagram! It’s been a little quiet over here, but for good reason. My residency at Starworks has been keeping me busy! I’ve been spending much of my time researching new ideas, experimenting, and making work in the studio. It’s also been wonderful being surrounded by so many talented artists and getting to share this experience with them. In the meantime, I have some exciting news to share! I’ve been selected for the 2027 Winter Residency at Penland School of Craft and invited to exhibit my work at NCECA 2027 in Baltimore! I’m grateful for these opportunities and for everyone who has supported my work along the way. It’s exciting to see where this journey is taking me. And there’s still one more big announcement on the horizon. I can’t wait to share it with you all! 👀 by @starworksceramics
THE MAKERS’ DOZEN | Live Auction October 17, 2026 Hitomi Shibata | Emptiness (3 pieces), 2025 Starworks NC clay, wild clay slips, red iron oxide, wood ash, 18” × 13” × 13” each Hitomi Shibata is a Japanese ceramic artist based in Seagrove, North Carolina, and is an outstanding member of Starworks’ community. She earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Art Education, with a concentration in ceramics, from Okayama University in Japan. Her artistic foundation was shaped in Shigaraki, one of Japan’s historic pottery centers, where she gained professional experience. In 2001, she received a Rotary Foundation Scholarship to study at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, and since 2005, she and her husband, Takuro Shibata, have established a pottery studio in Seagrove. Working with locally sourced clays and traditional Japanese-style wood kilns, Shibata’s practice explores the relationships between material, process, and fire, embracing natural variation and the beauty of imperfection. She is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics and co-author of ‘Wild Clay’. Her work has been presented internationally through exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and conferences. These three vessels were fired in May 2025 during the Woodfire NC preconference, part of Sustain, Starworks’ International Woodfiring Conference. The firing was particularly memorable for Shibata as she worked alongside ceramic artist John Neely, who passed away shortly after the conference. THE MAKERS’ DOZEN | Live Auction October 17, 2026 In next month’s ”Makers’ Dozen” live auction we are proudly featuring Legend of Lady Godiva by ceramic artist Ariana Stein. This 19” x 10.5” x 10.5” woodfired ceramic vessel draws from the 13th-century English folk tale of Lady Godiva, who, according to legend, rode naked through the streets of Coventry to persuade her husband to lift a heavy tax imposed on the townspeople. But Stein’s interpretation asks you to look closer. While the townspeople in the story avert their eyes, Lady Godiva looks directly at the viewer, her expression unflinching as a single tear falls from her cheek. Elaborate figurative decoration wraps the rounded vessel, while two sculptural handles and a traditional wood-salt-fired surface further accentuate the folk elements of this piece. Ariana’s work has a special connection to Starworks. They joined us as a year-long ceramic intern in 2023, and have since gone on to residencies and exhibitions across the U.S. and internationally, currently in residency at Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana. We’re thrilled to welcome Ariana’s work back to Starworks as part of The Makers’ Dozen, our annual benefit auction featuring 13 remarkable works by exceptional artists. The Makers’ Dozen Starworks 2026 Benefit & Live Auction Saturday, October 17 | 11AM–3PM Tickets are available now. Your participation helps sustain artists, expand educational opportunities, and inspire creativity through art, entrepreneurship, and community. Absentee bidding is available. Join us each week as we tell you a little more about the stars behind Starworks 🌟 Meet Ryan Osborne, artist, friend, dog-dad, and manager of Starworks Ceramic Supply Shop @starworksceramics Ryan joined Starworks in July 2021, but his connection to the local ceramics community began much earlier. In 2009, he visited the area on a field trip with Ferrum College’s ceramics program, and it was then that he first felt a connection to Seagrove and its pottery tradition. After earning his MFA from Kent State University in 2014, Ryan stayed in Ohio, where he became part of a growing wood-fire ceramics community and worked at a local ceramic supply shop. When he saw an opening at Starworks, he decided to take a chance on making the move to North Carolina, and we’re so fortunate he did. For Ryan, the opportunity to be surrounded by an incredible variety of local clays, an abundance of wood kilns, and a wood-fire tradition and ceramics community stretching back hundreds of years made this beautiful area feel like the right place to be. As we approach the end of our summer session, resident ceramic artists came together for a beautiful woodfiring - and we were lucky enough to catch a peek at the results. As is the nature of woodfiring, every piece tells a different story. Surfaces shift. Ash settles. Glazes respond to heat and atmosphere. Some results are anticipated; others are a complete surprise. We’re incredibly grateful to our summer ceramic residents Kate Oggel, Jessika Edgar, Jodi Connelly, Keiko Inouye, and Donovan Palmquist for joining us this season to experiment, collaborate, and make. An added thank you for letting us share a glimpse into their process along the way. 🧡 @jessikae15 @estrellaconnelly @keikopots @masterkilnbuilders Starworks’ residency programs are supported in part by the North Carolina Arts Council @ncartscouncil Learn more at StarworksNC.org 🌟 #starworks #starworksceramics #woodfiring #ceramics by @starworksceramics
