Meet Mac Metz, Director of Starworks Metals Studio 🌟
Mac’s story with Starworks began in 2007, when Hurricane Katrina displaced Wet Dog Glass from New Orleans. Looking for a new home, the Wet Dog team connected with Starworks, which was looking to establish a glass studio. The stars aligned, and Wet Dog Glass moved to Star, North Carolina, with Mac as lead fabricator. Mac also helped build the studio that would become the foundation of Starworks Glass. When Wet Dog eventually moved to Greensboro, Mac stayed at Starworks, continuing to build and develop the Metals program.

For Mac, one of the most rewarding parts of being at Starworks has been watching the campus transform. What began as an abandoned hosiery factory has grown into a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to the arts, shaped by the many artists who have worked here and left their mark along the way. To Mac, Starworks itself is a work of art in progress.

When he’s not in the studio working on sculpture or experimenting with materials, Mac enjoys travel, nature, time with his dog, film, music, poetry, philosophy, and stillness. He’s also a devoted supporter of FC Bayern München. (Mia San Mia!)

Quick Favorites

• Favorite Starworks event: Firefest 🔥
“It takes a huge amount of work to put together, but it is always worth the effort. Seeing this place at full throttle is awe inspiring and a sight to see. The fires on that Saturday night illuminate Starworks’ potential as well as the potential the arts give to the world.”

• Go-to Café order: Drip coffee during work; a Sexy Canoe after the work is done

• Favorite place on campus: The Atrium
“If I had to choose a favorite spot in Starworks I would have to say the Atrium. All the sculpture, the natural light and the industrial aura make it a very dynamic space. For me it holds a lot of history.”

THE MAKERS’ DOZEN | Live Auction: October 17, 2026

From school psychologist to internationally celebrated basketmaker, Billie Ruth Sudduth built an extraordinary artistic practice around the tradition of basketry.

Sudduth began making baskets as a diversion from her work as a school psychologist before deciding in 1989 to dedicate herself entirely to weaving. Her baskets draw inspiration from folk forms and from the numerical sequences of Fibonacci, the 13th-century Italian mathematician whose work helped describe the Golden Ratio found throughout nature.

This “Fibonacci in Reverse” basket, hand-woven by Sudduth in 2010, is a remarkable example of her signature approach. Measuring 11.25” x 14” x 14”, its intricate structure and red madder-dyed reed showcase the precision, rhythm, and natural forms that became hallmarks of her work.

A North Carolina artist and one of the most celebrated basketmakers of her generation, Sudduth’s work is held in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery and other major institutions. In 1997,she became the first woman to receive the North Carolina Living Treasure Award.

We’re honored to include this exceptional work in The Makers’ Dozen, our 2026 Benefit & Live Auction featuring 13 remarkable works.

THE MAKERS’ DOZEN | Live Auction October 17, 2026

Shallow Water by Peter Tietbohl

Rooted in the unpredictable beauty of the natural world, Peter Tietbohl’s work explores the complexity of nature through patterns that can never be exactly replicated.

Measuring 10.25” x 12” x 12”, this 2026 glass sculpture is part of Tietbohl’s ongoing bleaching coral series, exploring the fragile balance between life and death within coral reefs.

“The stark white interiors encroach on the vibrant colors of the corals, capturing the potential moment where bleaching either permanently kills the coral or the effects reverse if the temperature drops. The flash point.

The murky brown and vibrant blue color combination references the balance between the life and death of the corals, a healthy ocean, an ocean losing its most important organisms.”

Peter’s connection to Starworks began as an intern in our Glass Studio, and we’re incredibly proud to feature his work in The Makers’ Dozen. This annual benefit auction features 13 remarkable works by exceptional artists. Proceeds help sustain artists, expand educational opportunities, and support programs like our artist internship program.

THE MAKERS’ DOZEN | Live Auction October 17, 2026

In next month’s ”Makers’ Dozen” live auction we are proudly featuring Legend of Lady Godiva by ceramic artist Ariana Stein.

This 19” x 10.5” x 10.5” woodfired ceramic vessel draws from the 13th-century English folk tale of Lady Godiva, who, according to legend, rode naked through the streets of Coventry to persuade her husband to lift a heavy tax imposed on the townspeople.

But Stein’s interpretation asks you to look closer. While the townspeople in the story avert their eyes, Lady Godiva looks directly at the viewer, her expression unflinching as a single tear falls from her cheek. Elaborate figurative decoration wraps the rounded vessel, while two sculptural handles and a traditional wood-salt-fired surface further accentuate the folk elements of this piece.

Ariana’s work has a special connection to Starworks. They joined us as a year-long ceramic intern in 2023, and have since gone on to residencies and exhibitions across the U.S. and internationally, currently in residency at Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana.

We’re thrilled to welcome Ariana’s work back to Starworks as part of The Makers’ Dozen, our annual benefit auction featuring 13 remarkable works by exceptional artists.

COREY PEMBERTON | NANCY GOTTOVI VISITING ARTIST FELLOW | October 17–24, 2026

We’re thrilled to announce Corey Pemberton (@instantglassic) as the inaugural recipient of the Nancy Gottovi Visiting Artist Fellowship at Starworks.

Based in Los Angeles, Pemberton is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice moves between glass, painting, mixed media, and fiber. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Arts and Design, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Chrysler Museum of Art, and other leading institutions. Alongside his studio practice, Pemberton is the Executive Director of Crafting the Future, a nonprofit organization working to expand access and opportunity for artists of color in visual art, craft, and design. Across both his artwork and community work, connection, representation, identity, and belonging remain central concerns.

Corey’s current studio work centers on early American quilts and the visual languages they carry. During his current residency at McColl Center, he is translating historic quilt patterns into works in wood while incorporating them into paintings, primarily portraits and domestic interiors.

At Starworks, Corey will bring this investigation into glass, exploring how the geometry, repetition, and accumulated histories of quilt patterns can become new sculptural forms.

The Nancy Gottovi Visiting Artist Fellowship was established to bring accomplished artists to Starworks for immersive periods of experimentation and exchange. Fellows receive housing, travel and material support, and full access to our professional studios, creating space to develop new work while engaging with Starworks residents, interns, students, and the broader community.

We’re honored to welcome Corey to Starworks this October and excited to see where this new body of work takes him.
