Delhi AQI (Air Quality Index) refers to the measurement used to show how polluted the air in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) is and how it may affect human health. The Air Quality Index is a numerical scale that indicates the concentration of harmful pollutants in the air; the higher the AQI value, the more polluted the air and the greater the health risk for people living in that area.

In Delhi, AQI is monitored by environmental agencies such as the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) using multiple monitoring stations across the city. These stations measure pollutants like PM2.5, PM10, nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), and ozone (O₃). Based on these pollutant levels, the AQI is categorized into ranges such as Good (0-50), Satisfactory (51-100), Moderate (101-200), Poor (201-300), Very Poor (301-400), and Severe (401-500). Higher categories indicate increasing health risks, especially for children, elderly people, and those with respiratory problems.

Delhi frequently experiences high AQI levels, especially during the winter months, when weather conditions like low wind speed, temperature inversion, and fog trap pollutants close to the ground. In addition to weather conditions, major sources of pollution include vehicular emissions, industrial pollution, construction dust, burning of crop residue (stubble burning) in nearby states such as Punjab and Haryana, and firecrackers during festivals. These factors combine to create a thick layer of smog over the city, often pushing the AQI into the "very poor" or "severe" category.

High AQI levels in Delhi have significant environmental and health impacts. Poor air quality can lead to respiratory diseases, asthma, lung infections, heart problems, and reduced visibility due to smog. Long-term exposure to polluted air is also linked to reduced life expectancy and serious health complications. Because of these risks, authorities sometimes implement emergency measures such as restricting construction, controlling traffic, and closing schools during severe pollution episodes.
