Doll production in 1963 was a surprisingly hands-on process, blending early factory machinery with a lot of detailed manual work.
Faces were painted by workers using stencils and brushes, hair was stitched or glued on strand by strand, and bodies were molded from warm plastic before being cooled and assembled.
Conveyor belts moved dolls from one station to the next as each worker added a different feature
- eyes, eyelashes, clothing, accessories.
Watching the process now feels like stepping into a mid-century workshop, back when toys were made with a mix of precision tooling and real human craftsmanship.
