Free Throw is a live projection mapping experience that transforms the east façade of the SAP Center into a luminous arena for civic play. Conceived by artist professor G. Craig Hobbs and powered by a cohort of emerging media makers from San José State University, the work celebrates San José’s spirit of creativity, collaboration, culture and play.
Presented over two nights (March 26 & 28, 2026), this unprecedented public artwork reimagines the SAP Center as a site of collective experience, transforming downtown San José’s Barack Obama Boulevard into an immersive and interactive digital canvas.
Real time tracking blends seamlessly with 2D and 3D animations crafted by Art 175 students in the Video Projection Mapping course at San José State University, alongside graduates of the university’s animation program and CADRE alumni. Live action and student forged digital alchemy ignite a breathtaking immersive realm that lifts art and sport sky high, celebrating human potential while crafting an allegory of recompense, reconciliation and collective healing for a once divided public.
