#FreeThrowSJ2026: The Official Documentary! Link in bio for full documentary!🏀✨ Professor G. Craig Hobbs with students of San José State University and CADRE Media Lab alumni SAP Center, Downtown San José March 26 & 28, 2026 Free Throw was a live projection mapping experience that turned the east façade of the SAP Center into a luminous arena for civic play. Conceived by artist-professor G. Craig Hobbs and powered by a cohort of emerging media makers from San José State University, the work celebrated the arrival of NCAA's March Madness at the SAP Center while transmuting downtown San José into an immersive digital canvas. The work embraces and activates the free throw shot, an iconic aspect of basketball. In Free Throw, players from the public are given 3 free throw shots at an LED illuminated free-standing basketball hoop using internally lit glowing basketballs. The work creates a stunning interactive digital artwork projected onto the east facade of the SAP Center at a truly epic scale, The free throw shot is a temporary pause in the game. An unopposed attempt to score points after a foul. Free Throw - the artwork - offers the the chance for public play, interactivity, and participation. In the gentle arc of each glowing ball, in the collective breath held as shots sail toward their targets, in the cheers that rise from the gathered public, Free Throw elevates art and sport in celebration of human potential and as an allegory of recompense, reconciliation, and community healing for a divided public. - #sjsu #cadre40 #sjsudma #newmedia by @freethrow_sj

Last night, Spartans lit up more than the game. Outside the SAP Center during the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament, SJSU digital media art students, guided by Professor Craig G. Hobbs, created an interactive light installation that engaged fans and transformed public space through art and technology. Projects like this go beyond the classroom. They give students the chance to apply their skills in real-world settings, collaborate at a professional level, and contribute to experiences seen by thousands. Thank you to @freethrow_sj for their finesse and creative expertise! Spartans build momentum not just for themselves, but for those who follow.
