There are a lot of reasons the Heretic/HUMANITE collaboration deserves scrutiny.

Within days of Heretic raising more than $360,000 for its free breakfast program, people pointed out how dramatically that surpassed the fundraising of many Portland mutual-aid and food equity organizations that have been doing this work for years, many of them Black and brown-led.

Heretic eventually offered to split the proceeds among 10 local organizations, while other groups they had committed money to, or invited to apply for funding, were left waiting.
So why does this feel like the right way to help Palestinians?

Palestinians already have community networks, organizers, mutual-aid projects, political analysis, and people doing this work under unimaginably brutal conditions. There are also thousands of Palestinian families who need direct support.

then there’s HUMANITE.
The organization appears to have been founded by two white Christian missionaries whose work in Southwest Asia began after 9/11. They have referred to parts of the Arab world as “Islamist strongholds,” while HUMANITE’s own materials have reproduced a framework that positions Western institutions as the ones capable of understanding, mediating, or solving problems for people in the region.

That matters because this isn’t just about individual stereotypes. It gets at what Edward Said described through Orientalism: who gets to produce knowledge, who gets treated as an authority, and who gets positioned as the subject who needs to be managed, rescued, civilized, or spoken for.
It is genuinely bizarre to watch an organization recommend books about the history of Western power and representation of the Arab world while reproducing some of the exact dynamics those books critique. Maybe read the book you put on your own reading list.

HUMANITE has also condemned Palestinian resistance while advocating “nonviolence” and coexistence, drawn equivalencies between Palestinians and Israeli settlers, and praised Israeli settlers for protesting their government.

And since public criticism began, significant parts of HUMANITE’s website have changed.
