Lego SW rocket pack. X50. 2000.
Lego pistol revolver 30132 solid handle.
Here we have an early super rare test shot of the rocket pack used for the original Boba Fett / Jango Fett in old light grey. We have seen this before in red and black and I believe that this is the first time it has been shared publicly. Test shots are often referred to as prototypes but in fact they are not. Prototype parts are parts that have been 3d printed , without a stud ring and always without part numbers, they are the very beginnings of what the part is intended to look like and give the designers something to start and work with. During the prototyping development the designers will adjusted this by refining and adding details. When the designers are happy with the design they then work towards the test shot stage. Test shots are the refined elements that are moulded after the prototyping development. Here the stud ring/geometry will be added together with the designated parts id. Parts will be moulded in 3 different colours.. Red for checking stress, grey for checking clarity of details and black for desired finish like smoothness and shine. Each colour has its own unique purpose.

Killer! The word prototype is so mis-used in most toy collecting areas. Like you say, a true prototype is something else, like SLA or hardcopies. But many hobby areas use prototype as a non desceiptive word for anything ”pre-production”. And for us Lego collectors which mostly can get access to test molds, a vague term as prototype for a late stage test mold is ok in my book. And this sure is up there, sweet piece for sure, first time I see a grey version of this 😍
