I keep forgetting to post about our
@chapter25bookclub reads but this one was definitely a fave. As a 30 something Brit, I know very little about the war in Vietnam. Even less about who actually went over there for any of the armed forces. In The Women, we are told the story of Frankie who decides to enlist as a nurse and head to Vietnam. The army is the only one that she qualifies for and she ends up treating both the troops and the locals. We also see her return to civilian life and how badly she is treated by both her family and those who say they help "veterans". A big part of this is that she's faced with the attitude of "there were no women in 'Nam". Interestingly when I discussed this with a friend (they hadn't read the book) on the way to book club, they said to me " I didn't think there were any women in the Vietnam war". So that holds up.
Such a good ending which really turned it into a 5 star read. Im currently reading another Kristin Hannah book and it just isn't holding up as well for me.
