Book 35 of 2026 completed. Thank you to the @waterstonesnotts bookseller who told me this is a straight to the point kind of book. Finished in a day. Excellent work. #thewaxchild #olgaravn by @thisisjaynem

Book 2 of reading the Booker Longlist 2026.

This had so much potential but M. John Harrison decided that anything goes. At one point I wondered if it was a translated piece, an albeit badly done one.

I'm convinced he's trying to produce something Orwellian that is a metaphor about the events we see concerning immigration along our south eastern shores. Add into that some sort of alien invasion and that's the premise of the book. Except you're never entirely sure that's what's going on. There's certainly a lack of law enforcement aside from a few road blocks. But there are also ghosts, things beneath the water and random killings.

I found it really hard to grasp what I was supposed to imagine.

This will probably win. 😆

Last month I could not stop reading. This month I have barely picked up a book. I have things to read, I just don't know what I want to start with. I have little interest in things, I am tired of being asked what I want to do for work because nothings coming in and I genuinely don't know what I want to do because nothing ever satisfies me. I can't picture anything, I have pretty much given up. by @thisisjaynem

I keep forgetting to post about our @chapter25bookclub reads but this one was definitely a fave. As a 30 something Brit, I know very little about the war in Vietnam. Even less about who actually went over there for any of the armed forces. In The Women, we are told the story of Frankie who decides to enlist as a nurse and head to Vietnam. The army is the only one that she qualifies for and she ends up treating both the troops and the locals. We also see her return to civilian life and how badly she is treated by both her family and those who say they help "veterans". A big part of this is that she's faced with the attitude of "there were no women in 'Nam". Interestingly when I discussed this with a friend (they hadn't read the book) on the way to book club, they said to me " I didn't think there were any women in the Vietnam war". So that holds up.

Such a good ending which really turned it into a 5 star read. Im currently reading another Kristin Hannah book and it just isn't holding up as well for me.

April was books, nature, food and some auntie afternoons. by @thisisjaynem

Safe to say I've gone into a bit of a slump after trying to complete the Women's Prize Shortlist and various book club reads. Time to slow it down and relax in the sunshine. #bookstagram #aprilreads #womensprizeforfiction by @thisisjaynem

A bit of an eleventh hour post but here's the six I'd like to see on the shortlist tomorrow. I don't feel knowledgeable enough to make a guess what will be actually be picked.

I got through 12 of the 16 longlisted. I'll read the last 4 over the next few weeks whether they make it or not.

Fellow readers, I am drained. I've read 2 of the above and 8 this month so far. I think I am out of my February/March slump. But wow, it's been a bit of a weekend hasn't it? I hope you will always find this page to be an ally.

It's been so great to see so much queership written about in the Women's Prize longlist, which as you can see from my stories I am in the full swing of getting through. My storygraph has "emotional" as my top mood for April. I feel that, I really do. Although today I completed Moderation which isn’t quite also heavy on that, a nice reprise.

Well I had some high expectations for Heart The Lover from everything I'd seen you post. But I think I didn't quite comprehend the blistering anxiety it would give me part the way through. Happy, happy, happy and all that. It definitely hit all the poetic highness needed to tell the story through the narrator as she experiences a truly sliding doors moment. Would love to see this on the Women's Prize Shortlist. 5 stars.

Making my way through Flashlight, one of this year's Women's Prize Longlist nominations. Have you read this one yet? I upped it to 2x speed yesterday whilst cycling and it definitely helped. #BookRecommendations #WomensPrize2026 #flashlight #Bookstagram #susanchoi by @thisisjaynem

I changed my mind about what to read in April and now this little pile is going to have to sit next to me 24/7 as a reminder that I should be reading! Another job rejection today so there's not much else to do. #Bookstagram #ReadersOfInstagram #booksbooksbooks📚 by @thisisjaynem
