The Kikuyu people of Kenya were colonized by the British from 1895 to 1963—a period spanning 68 years. My mother was born at the tail end of colonial rule, and I was fortunate enough to have some conversations with my grandparents about Kikuyu customs before colonization. Thankfully, about a quarter of Kenyans today still maintain elements of indigenous ways of life.

Even in 2025, our culture continues to carry the weight of colonial legacies, alongside the ongoing impacts of neo-colonialism. My decolonizing journey has been deeply rooted in trying to understand our past—how we lived, how our ways were altered, and why those changes were imposed. I’m constantly learning new things about our traditions, and I feel grateful to be able to ask my mum—who grew up in rural Kenya, where Kikuyu culture is still deeply held—about our indigenous approaches to relationships and community.

This particular conversation was sparked when she mentioned that, during polygamous times, people didn’t experience jealousy over a spouse being with others. That insight opened up a whole reflection on what we’ve lost, what we’ve internalized, and what we might still reclaim.

It’s interesting and sad how you all were traumatized by the white colonizers and still worship them so much that you are more proud to creating with them over your own people by marrying and reproducing with them and taking their names when they never would replace their culture with Kenyan culture

There was also some level of violence that was induced to force people to drop their culture and adopt the white man religion

Bizarrely, this was the Roman Catholic (or derived) religion, zero to do with Jesus or the new testament. The internal reign of oneself aligning with the divine is gnosticism, mysticism, etc. and doesn't conflict with any culture or religion, and besides which, for all that's disturbing in the Bible, it doesn't actually even teach monogamy 😅 Keep decolonising till so much shit has hit the fan that the narcissists are fresh out of shit 😊🙏

Whilst we are here, I am in need of urgent help to help buy land for an orphanage in soweto kayole. I have a fundraising page struggling to raise for them. Nonetheless I am heading down to Kenya in May to attest renovate for them with the little money I have raised. @smile_kenya_children is the name. Please find it in your heart to help these children. Thank you 🙌. This year my village was taken by the rebel m23, so I can no longer continue to assist this orphanage in kenya because my people need me much more, but I can't also abandon the children of soweto kayole. Please please please, I am begging any kenyans to help out.

Very curious to hear more and love that you share her own words! Would love to hear more about how life was different and regarding this topic, did it work for both genders? Were women free to choose to be with another man?
