Access riders are useful. But they rely on disclosure, language, timing and trust. And not everyone has equal access to those conditions.

Alongside that, it’s also about how we pay attention to each other and how we relate.

As part of our research, we’ve been thinking about how access is shaped by relationships, everyday interactions beyond processes and forms.

A doctor told Max Doppelt that if his mom were Chinese, she could just buy the drug at a pharmacy. So he got on a plane to Shanghai. His mother, Debbie, a 60-year-old New York jeweler, was diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer in 2023. By late 2024, it had spread to her brain, and the treatments available in the US weren’t good options for her. Max learned that a targeted drug called sunvozertinib, made by a Chinese company, had already been approved in China. He flew to Shanghai and came home with 26 boxes of the medication, which reportedly cost about $10,000. It made a real difference. Along with a few rounds of radiation and some dose adjustments, the drug has kept Debbie’s cancer largely under control for about 19 months, and she’s kept working through it all. After three days in the mountains, I could smell the sea before I saw it. I came down from Meteora by bus, train and bus again, across the Corinth Canal and through the orange groves of the Argolid. I got off at the edge of Nafplio just as the light was going. Salt, diesel, fried fish and woodsmoke.
