RE-POST: This remains one of my all-time favorite lightning and cloud structure photos of my entire lightning chasing career, and the story behind it is one I’ll be talking about for years.

While on a cruise to the Bahamas, I packed my full kit—tripod, lenses, and of course my Cameras—knowing that traveling the open ocean at night offers an incredible chance for deep-sea thunderstorms. Just before dark, I watched this towering thundercloud bank keep growing and growing on the horizon.

As we were cruising, the ship practically came to a standstill because they were serving dinner. Seizing the moment of perfectly flat, stable water, I locked my camera onto the tripod and began taking 20 second exposures.

The cloud top looked like something straight out of a sci-fi movie—completely interstellar. I was ready, set, and just waiting for that very first bolt of lightning to fire. When it did, I captured this absolute masterpiece. All the subsequent bolts that night were just alright, but that first strike was the ultimate payout. 💲 💵

A huge thank you to my friend 𝑺𝒄𝒐𝒕𝒕 𝑩𝒐𝒙𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍, who took my original photo and added a little extra light into the scene. His subtle edit and tweak made the cloud top, the entire ocean storm, and even the surrounding stars pop beautifully!
