Thank you
@cc_tapis and
@fornasetti for trusting me to curate the conceptual and narrative framework for (META)FISICA — a sensory exhibition of new rugs that explore the universal symbols of Piero Fornasetti’s oeuvre at a monumental scale.
(META)FISICA is named after an extraordinary 32-panel
#Fornasetti screen from 1958 (formerly owned by Sting!) that became a lynchpin for the exhibition’s maze-like format, but also our investigation of his work as a flat architectural gesture.
Fornasetti represents a cornucopia of decorative ideas and notions for many around the world, which is why it was essential to take a radical approach to this exhibition: reawakening the natural and human characters Piero was drawing in the early 1950s as flat planes in conversation with his working tools such as zinc transfer plates and original transparent drawings.
In dialogue with
@pablomolezunstudio, we considered the concrete
#cctapis space as a clinical gallery, where office blinds and yellow linoleum reactivate the natural light of the Piazza Santo Stefano creating a glowy cocoon where rugs are hung in floating layers and placed in conversation with each other through games of height, proportion and mirroring.
In each room, archival designs float in mahogany frames by
@bahrainidanish for
@cassetta.dk, or polished steel cabinets by
@nm3.xyz.
Grounding the experience in an ethereal soundscape, the Catalan artist
@carlosmcasas took the hisses of snakes and purrs of cats, whispers, weaving clatter and more from his archives and remixed them into a multichannel composition that guides the audience through each room, culminating in the 20-minute composition in the gallery’s basement, where a Pointillist Roman ruin is watched over by a coppery sun king.
Finally, a selection of metaphysical texts dating back to the 8th century accompany the show in a printed guide, allowing visitors to contemplate Sylvia Plath or John Donne, D.H Lawrence and Italo Calvino as they visit the show - and hopefully long after.
Thank you to the passionate and hard-working teams that made this surreal Salone dream a reality.
