6 months agoI’m so glad you wrote this perspective. When I was a teen in Detroit, there was a robust parks and recreation department with plenty of healthy free activities for teens. Then, when I was a young adult, the city invested money in the program Kim Weston started for teens to learn the arts from professionals called Festival for the Performing Arts. The kids were paid to study with the likes of Poet Laureate Dudley Randall and Motown’s band leader from the Funk Brothers, Earl Van Dyke and others… they studied and performed all over the city throughout the summer. The city needs to invest in programs for teens that are meaningful and that tap into their interests.
