ENTERTAINMENT | Actor Idris Elba / @idriselba says that before landing his breakout role as Stringer Bell on HBO’s “The Wire,” people often assumed he was Jamaican or Haitian rather than British because of his demeanor and acquired American accent.

During a conversation with Trevor Noah, Elba recalled keeping his East London background secret throughout the audition process and performing with an American accent because he had been warned that producers wanted someone who could authentically portray Baltimore.

When producers eventually discovered he was British, Elba said some had already been trying to guess where he was from, with Jamaican and Haitian among the assumptions.

Elba ultimately landed the role of Stringer Bell, which became his major breakthrough in the United States and helped launch his international acting career •
