For the past year I’ve been running design classes for kids from home. We make all sorts of things big and small. This past week we worked on mobiles. As usual the kids sketch their ideas first. For this project they were the client and their challenge was to create a cohesive grouping—a collection of images that dangle and twirl together telling a story or conveying a theme.
They had fun ideas from NY pizza rats, to nature, monsters, and even a dinner plate. They cut and painted, and together we figured out how to balance everything.
In a few weeks we’ll move these sessions to our studio space in Boerum Hill when
@protototodesignlab opens. We’ll have more room to play, build, and test ideas. And I’ll do my best to bring over the same comfort we had at home—getting to create over tea and croissants, green grapes and impromptu dances.
