#NOWNESSASIAPicks NEW: In 'Melting Blue', director Ziyuan He uses a delicate and restrained narrative to portray a young musician in a long-distance relationship, capturing her longing for connection and the unspoken tension that comes with it. 💙
The film's original Chinese title, '散射⾄弥漫', precisely encapsulates this emotional state. And the English title is inspired by a personal experience Ziyuan had while moving house. At sunset, an empty room was filled with blue light, a fleeting shade of blue that he described as 'the residue of longing filling the entire space'.
In addition, Ziyuan chose to abandon a traditional musical score, relying on sound to carry emotion. These sounds were selected to amplify and emphasise emotional shifts, allowing the audience to feel them directly. 'Melting Blue' does not offer answers. Instead, it provides a precise expression of subtle states and emotions. As Ziyuan shares, 'It can only become a fleeting impulse, a dream, before she goes back to the reality they cannot avoid.'
