This is a mixing demo using using mvMeter2 from TB ProAudio. This free plug-in is so helpful. Link: https://www.tbproaudio.de/products/mvmeter2 @tbproaudio
This is my method:
Insert on the mix bus
Calibrate to -18 dBFS
Set solo drum level so kick is around -7
Set combined drum and bass level to around -5
Add other elements, so full mix is around zero in the loud sections.
Consequently hit your mix bus compressor around -18 (I use SSL G Bus Compressor from UAD)
This all sounds pretty basic but gain staging is often underrated. This approach ensures all my mixes have a consistent starting point and I don’t get fooled by processing that just makes it louder, not better.

Can’t remember where I got the multitracks from (probably @producelikeapro) but it is Man in The Box (Alice in Chains cover) from Jared James. It’s a great recording of a great performance!
