During her time at Vashon Artist Residency, artist Mary Coss @marycoss_studio has been combing the beaches for wood, metal, and shells that spark both visual and language-based responses. Her work reimagines familiar images and objects to examine history, identity, and social justice through allegory.
Mary’s interdisciplinary practice often integrates writing, castings, fabric, digital media, and found or manipulated materials, resulting in layered installations and sculptures. She has exhibited nationally and internationally and received support from the NEA, Ford Foundation, Puffin Foundation, 4Culture, and Artist Trust. Her major works include Public Debt to the Suffragette, recipient of the ACLU’s “Art to Change the World” award, and Layers of the Hijab, a three-year NEA-funded project. Her public art includes Ghostlog, a Tacoma waterfront collaboration with the Puyallup Tribe that integrates Indigenous language, craft, and sound.
Mary holds an MFA from Syracuse University’s Experimental Studios and is a committed cultural worker, serving as a mentor and curator. She co-founded METHOD Gallery in Seattle, where she is currently based.
