as a san diegan i can confirm this is real - Near Lake Hodges in San Diego County, rival supercolonies of Argentine ants have fought territorial battles on an enormous scale. In a study published in 2006, UC San Diego researchers estimated that at least 15 million workers died along one colony’s borders in just six months. Both sides belong to the same species. Argentine ants recognize colony membership through chemical cues, allowing workers from distant nests within one supercolony to cooperate while attacking nearby outsiders. These colonies are networks of nests, so the conflict stretches far beyond a fight between two anthills.
