“You don’t need to be rich to be an artist. Art belongs to everyone!”

Since I’m very young I’ve always loved Vincent Van Gogh art and the story behind his paintings so when I discovered that there was a manga on his story, I immediately picked it up. When I started reading I noticed that everything wasn’t based on his real life story and that a lot of the informations were invented or romanticized but it was written and drawn in such a beautiful way that I loved it anyway.

What I loved the most about this manga is that for once Theodore is the main character, you see the relation he had with Vincent through his eyes, you discover more about his life and how important he was in the art world at that time, how he fought the beaux arts academy who privatized art exhibitions and who made arts only accessible to the elites and how, with the help of some painters, he made a place for artists who weren’t rich or high born to be recognized as artists too.

There’s a passage in this manga that made me a bit emotional. Theodore is talking to other painters about how Vincent was born sick and his sickness was that he doesn’t know what anger is and that for him the simple fact of living is beautiful, for me in that sentence you could see how different both brothers were from each other but also how similar they were. Vincent saw his life through his paintings so life was beautiful but also devastatingly sad because he spend his whole life stuck with seeing everything through his paintings, while Theodore lived his life with the brutal truth of seeing everything but he always tried to make Vincent known for his art, in a time where art was reserved to the riches because he knew people would love his paintings but except him, no one payed attention to Vincent and his paintings, until he died.
