Until we Shatter is a fantasy based in an urban setting with a romantic subplot, and with a magic system so unique yet complex enough that it required a full on written explanation mid-book. Do I believe that readers would have benefited from the more elaborate explanation being available at the beginning of the book? Yes. Do I think that the author left it to be revealed within the book for a reason, and that said reason was important to the plot? Also yes.
Had I read ahead of time about the abilities of the amber strain of hue, I imagine that the latter third of the book would not have hit anywhere near as hard as it did. I did not expect some of what occurred, and actually went back mid-read and found foreshadowing that was well done that hinted at the events that went on to happen.
Character wise, I do agree with many others in that with this being a standalone, I did not feel attached to every character. Eve and Ezzo in particular felt more pushed to the side- And knowing now that there is a "sequel"/interconnected standalone where Ezzo is a focus, I understand why. For Eve however this made her feel more like a plot device than a main character. Lyria, I felt, was woven into the group well given that she wasn't with them from the beginning. Her disability became a strength, and was something the group actually required to pull off their plots. I think she became my favourite throughout the book.
As for the relationships shown within, I felt more invested in the one between Cemmy and Novi than the one between Cemmy and Chase! Maybe that's just because I was a bigger fan of Novi than Chase, but I was honestly hoping that they would be end game (despite going in knowing that they would not be).
As a whole, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! There are little nitpicks that kept it from being a full 5 star read personally, but I would recommend it and fully intend to read the next book!
