I really wanted to get more of my book taste on here, and what better way than a post with 5 books for various prompts!! It was fun and nostalgic, especially when reminiscing on the books I read throughout my school years! I still own three out of five of these!!

I liked Belle in the initial picture too, so added her to the rest- May as well keep her throughout!!! <3

If it isn't obvious from the final slide too, Chloe Gong is my all time favourite author- and probably the only current instabuy author I have!!

WHEN THE MOON HATCHED- Sarah A Parker

Star Rating: ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰

. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁ . ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁ . ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁ . ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁

When the Moon Hatched scratches the romantasy itch in exactly the way I hoped it would when I heard my friends raving about it. I read this mammoth of a book within 3 days, which given that it looked intimidating before, I'm pretty jazzed about!

The main reasons this book isn't a five star read for me is as follows: I personally feel like between about the 60-80% mark of the book there was a lull in the story. I had a moment where I wasn't as invested, though that was remedied by the end. The other reason was some of the language- While much of the book was poetic and descriptive, sometimes a little too much so, I felt this was bisected by a lot of the dialogue being more crass with modern insults. I think a happy medium would have helped, but it also did not put me off finishing the book.

Plot spoilers to follow!

The plot flowed extremely well in my opinion, an initial inciting incident that I couldn't help but cheer for ended up having damning consequences for our main character, Raeve, which led to a heart-wrenching moment between her and her then-roommate, which propelled the plot into further consequences. While a revenge plot isn't always my favourite, I found myself rooting for Raeve, hoping that while I loved where she had found herself, that she would also get the opportunity to exact her revenge on Rekk.

At the beginning, I never expected that there was a memory-loss plot hook, however as we continued on it became more evident. I hope in the sequel we find out more about this, about how 'Elluin' died, and about Kyzari as a character herself. Where the book ended off with her greatly intrigues me, and I hope we see her more in the sequel!

Kaan has my heart. An absolute king (metaphorically and literally) who actually thinks, and was willing to let Raeve leave again forsaking his own happiness for hers. He seems to be calculating in the right way, but is more than willing to let his emotions show.

FISHBONE CINDERELLA- Elizabeth Lim

Star Rating: ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰

. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁ . ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁ . ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁ . ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁

eARC granted via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review; Thank you to @delreybooks for the opportunity to read and review this book prior to publication!

I want to preface this review with a little info about me for context: I am a white, Scottish woman. I feel like this is important to mention as a lot of what was spoken about in this book (I.e the second Sino-Japanese war and specific familial dynamics that were the norm back then) are things I was both not alive for and also not taught about in school.

Elizabeth Lim's writing has never once failed to pull me in, and this book is no exception to that fact. Both of our main characters who we focused on, Helen and Marigold, were enticing in their own ways, and I felt the way their stories intertwined into the climax was done in such an amazing way. The mysteries behind the family's curse would never have been solved without insistence from Marigold, and seeing them come to fruition was satisfying.

The differences and similarities between both women's relationships with their mothers were something I personally felt attached to- Though in differing ways from those shown in some places. I felt that this was something which only increased my enjoyment of the novel, and where I couldn't relate to the content in regards to living through occupation, I could relate to these familial relationships. Elizabeth did an amazing job of immersing me within the settings, and I was able to understand the difficulties without prior knowledge of the events. It has me wanting to research and learn more about it too!

As a girlie who almost exclusively enjoys fantasy books, this was refreshing. While there is a fantastical element, I would argue that the focus is much more on the historical aspects and while the magic is important, it does not overshadow the issues addressed within the book. I would fully recommend this to my friends as a book which will make you think, and will certainly make you feel everything from giddiness to pity throughout.

UNTIL WE SHATTER- Kate Dylan

Star Rating: ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰

. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁ . ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁ . ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁ . ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁

Until we Shatter is a fantasy based in an urban setting with a romantic subplot, and with a magic system so unique yet complex enough that it required a full on written explanation mid-book. Do I believe that readers would have benefited from the more elaborate explanation being available at the beginning of the book? Yes. Do I think that the author left it to be revealed within the book for a reason, and that said reason was important to the plot? Also yes.

Had I read ahead of time about the abilities of the amber strain of hue, I imagine that the latter third of the book would not have hit anywhere near as hard as it did. I did not expect some of what occurred, and actually went back mid-read and found foreshadowing that was well done that hinted at the events that went on to happen.

Character wise, I do agree with many others in that with this being a standalone, I did not feel attached to every character. Eve and Ezzo in particular felt more pushed to the side- And knowing now that there is a "sequel"/interconnected standalone where Ezzo is a focus, I understand why. For Eve however this made her feel more like a plot device than a main character. Lyria, I felt, was woven into the group well given that she wasn't with them from the beginning. Her disability became a strength, and was something the group actually required to pull off their plots. I think she became my favourite throughout the book.

As for the relationships shown within, I felt more invested in the one between Cemmy and Novi than the one between Cemmy and Chase! Maybe that's just because I was a bigger fan of Novi than Chase, but I was honestly hoping that they would be end game (despite going in knowing that they would not be).

As a whole, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! There are little nitpicks that kept it from being a full 5 star read personally, but I would recommend it and fully intend to read the next book!
