4 months ago4/4 We returned home on Sunday, Father’s Day. Our amazing David did not have the most relaxing Father’s Day ever, but we got him his gift a few weeks ago. It’s a beautiful painting by Anthony Sweat called Arms of Mercy, and Anthony and his fabulous wife Cindy delivered it to us in person. Coincidentally, David’s brother Michael (of Masterworks Frames) designed the frame with Anthony and built it. The artistic world is small indeed! The painting is gorgeous and perfect for our home, and it was a treat to meet and visit with the Sweats. They are both very cool people.
4 months ago3/4 Finally, on Saturday night after a fantastic day touring the incredible Museum of African American Music (if you are in Nashville, GO THERE!!!!) and supporting our young rock stars, David and I attended a Max Richter concert at Ryman Auditorium. While his music is not the typical music one might expect to hear in Nashville - it’s basically new age/classical/film scores, etc - it was THE BEST place to hear it! The Ryman was the original location of the Grand Ole Opry. The seats aren’t terrible comfortable, but the acoustics are INSANE. Played live to perfection in such a venue, Richter’s music was impossibly beautiful and emotional. We were all swept away for 2 hours.
4 months ago2/4 On Juneteenth, we attended a performance at the Nashville Jazz Workshop (if you are in Nashville, GO THERE!!!!), where 4 master jazz musicians improvised for 2 hours straight. The music was brilliant and beautiful, and it felt almost sacred to witness such talent, skill, and vulnerability.
4 months ago1/4 When David and I weren’t tagging along for the recording and the performance, we made a getaway out of the trip. We attended some great museums, ate yummy food, and heard some unreal music. Did you know Nashville has an AMAZING Jazz scene? It does! Thursday night we had dinner at The Marquee (total speakeasy vibes!) during their weekly Jam Session where locals could jump in and perform with the set. Trust me, though - this was not a karaoke night. Half of the “locals” were Belmont music students, and the talent was truly inspiring. As a musical actress, I’m in awe of Jazz musicians with their unbelievable improv skills and a massive catalog of songs they can play on request. “I’m singing ‘Misty' in E flat!” and the band just knows how to play it. It’s unreal! 😲
