Okay accent nerds,

American accents by non-Americans. Ones you love? Ones you hate? And ones you appreciate, but you still catch their own accents sneaking in?

A few fun ones to start:

Hugo Weaving in Slow Horses - phonetically respectable, tonally feels overdone, slogging, and weighty - BUT it’s all part of the character he’s creating, like he’s infusing the ick into his tone (which makes sense!)

Harriet Walter in Silo (I love her so much, BTW!) - It’s great phonetically, and it’s so clear the pace, pitch range, and tone are a big part of the character she’s creating (who, incidentally, was a crotchety old man in the book). It feels a little heavy-handed, but I still kinda love that she infuses the man in the book with her own performance.

Rebecca Ferguson in Silo - Phonetically she hits the mark 90 %, but she occasionally reveals her own Swedish accent in her rhythm and occasional softening of some post-vocalic Rs; The rest of her performance is so special, though. It’s impossible to not care for her, and the accent is consistent enough to not pull me out.

Chinaza Uche - Friends, this man is Scottish, but he’s US based and he basically has an American accent. 🤯 I was going to praise his accent in Silo until I listened to him in an interview and realized HE BARELY HAS A SCOTTISH ACCENT (?!). Where did it go? Can he turn it back on full-blast like James McAvoy or Jack Lowden? (Wait, what am I thinking, of course he can. All Scots can). Anyway, I don’t know if it’s cool or sad that he assimilated so hard in the US. I mean, if I wanted to swap my accent for something new, I don’t think I’d choose boring Gen Am. (Says the East coast girl who moved to Utah in the 90s and infused her own accent with Utah-isms 🤦🏻‍♀️)

Finally, the ridiculously beautiful Remmie Milner in Silo - Flawless. I never in a million years would’ve guessed she was English. Go watch an interview with her, then go watch her performance as Shirley in Silo. Phonetics, rhythm, pace, word stress - It’s all there, and it’s seamless. I’m such a fan. (Also possible crush, because Shirley + Knox = 🔥😍)

Okay, nerd friends. (All 2 of you.). Your turn. by @diannagraham

I just finished some marvelous experiences with astonishing writing and truly inspiring women.

Last weekend, I participated in a staged-reading of Sharlee Mullins Glenn’s “Brighter and Brighter Until The Perfect Day.” The text is absolutely GORGEOUS and thought-provoking, and I had the privilege of being The Narrator.

Among the many amazing people involved was Melissa Dalton Bradford, another one of my heroes, who played Heavenly Mother in the piece. 🥹

(Sharlee and Melissa are two of the founders of MWEG!)

Our marvelous director was the incredible Kathy Curtiss, a master at storytelling with Shakespeare and other high texts. I was over the moon to be involved with this beautiful project and these brilliant women.

After Saturday’s reading was over, I gratefully dove into Melissa’s sobering, yet encouraging new book “How to Save Democracy - The Anti-Authoritarian Playbook.” Every call to action - very doable action - was a balm full hope and courage in a time when so many of us are struggling against feelings of helplessness, distress, disappointment, and anger over our government and the erosion of democracy. 😔

The good news is we are not helpless! This book offers so many ways we can engage and have an impact. I highly recommend reading and/or listening to it. (I had to do both, partially for the joy of hearing Melissa’s encouraging voice.)

If you’re like me and have been wringing your hands over the disinformation, the capitulation from congress, the cooperation of corrupt or weak judges, the unhinged late night AI slop posts, the money grabbing, the unsanctioned and unmerited war in Iran, damaging tariffs, the evil actions of ICE agents, etc, READ THIS BOOK. It will give you hope through detailed guidance on ways you can move forward and be a part of the solution. Let’s do this! by @diannagraham

It’s this lovely creature’s 75th birthday (70 years on earth + 5 in heaven). Mom’s life was a beautiful, unbelievably challenging journey full of many triumphs and trials, some of which would’ve beaten down the strongest person. I don’t know how she survived a lot of it. I’m so proud of her for all she overcame, though, and I’m grateful for her enduring love for my sister and me and our spouses and children all the way to the end.

Plus she was just so damn pretty. 😍☺️

Happy Birthday, Mom! Love and miss you so much! 🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷😘😘😘 by @diannagraham

Today is the most special day of the year when we get to celebrate this glorious creature! David is my best friend in the whole world, and I love him so much! He is the most amazing father, dog-nurturer, music lover, concert goer, theatre fan, Disney dad, travel buddy, foodie, and all the other things you wish for in a companion. The kids and I are so blessed by his love, service, humor, and compassion. He makes the world a better place just by being in it. I’m so glad that he was born!

Happy Birthday, my love! 😍🎂🎁🎉🎈🥳

Also, this lovely creature started 11th grade last Wednesday, and I’m kind of obsessed with her. 😍 We’re so excited to see where these next two years will take her. Her resilience, drive, tender heart, and creativity truly inspire me. I love her so much! 🥹😭😭😭🩷 by @diannagraham

It’s going to take me awhile to pick my jaw off the ground and fully process this one.

IT. WAS. SOOOOOOOO. BRILLIANT. 😌

The directing, cast, and design were just unreal. There was so much joy in the room. I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed a more exciting performance or a more talented group of artists. I was just overwhelmed and in awe of them all and this production. And Grizabella had me in tears from her first entrance. I almost fell apart during “Memory.” @i_am_tempress was STUNNING. 😭😭

Congratulations @cooperhowelldirects, and thank you for an unforgettable experience! I’m truly inspired by what you all created. Wishing everyone the very best in this final week (of a show that deserves to never close). I’m obsessed with you all!

Damn, I’m so grateful I got to see it. 🥹 by @diannagraham

What must it be like to create such breathtaking music? Glen Hansard knew.

I’m grateful David and I could catch Glen and Marketa’s band The Swell Season a few years ago in SLC, but I hoped for more chances to see him or them. I often fantasized about going to Ireland for one of his upcoming Autumn performances. How crushing that he passed just months before that tour! 😭

I’m gutted for his family, his friends, his band members, and for all of his fans. His music was absolutely drenched with beautiful soul, and it spoke to so many. Once again, a great artist (and a great person) is gone just too soon. 😔💔 by @diannagraham

David and I got to be groupies for Ian and Mira during their Nashville tour with Soundhouse last week. I’m still processing all of the great experiences and great music.

In addition to attending some fantastic workshops, the Musician’s Hall of Fame, and seeing a show at the Grand Ole Opry, the kids had a recording session at historic RCA studio and performed at the National Museum of African American Music. They had such an amazing trip, and we’re grateful for those who made it possible for them.

I’m alive!!!  It wasn’t pretty, but I finished my second marathon.  🏃🏻‍♀️🏋️ Woohoo!  I’m completely insane!  🤪

When I looked at the weather on Friday before my final 3 mile training run, my heart sank.  Highland was going to be in the high 80s on Friday and hit 90 on Saturday (today).  That meant Provo would be similar during the Utah Valley Marathon.  I’m not one of those amazing runners who can finish a marathon in under 3 hours and beat the heat.  If I ever hit 4:30, I’ll be thrilled.  Alas, today was not the day.  The heat during those final 8 miles was BRUTAL.  Instead of shaving time off of my PR, I finished 13 minutes slower.  No gong today.  🤷🏻‍♀️

The punchline - I was still 15th in my division, just like last year. Which must mean we were all taking a beating. So many runners around me, including many younger, fitter people, were walking a lot and/or needing to stretch during the final 5 miles. Mother Nature will always win in these situations.

Thankfully, I was able to avoid leg cramps by walking part of the time, chewing a ton of electrolytes in the final miles, and sipping from my camel pack. And, ironically, I almost didn’t run today. I’ve had foot and ankle pain the last few weeks. A doctor ruled out a stress fracture on Thursday, and I decided to follow through on the race. I was grateful to even be running despite the difficulty.

I’m grateful for the support of my family, and, honestly, I’m sort of grateful for the life lessons things like this teach me.  It’s okay to “fail,” because when you show up and give your all, you’re still succeeding.  🙂

As I said last year, I’m not sure I will ever run a marathon again.  If I do, it will definitely NOT be this one.  The hills between miles and 7 and 12 are exhausting.  I have a friend who has run several marathons including Boston (twice!), and she does not like this one.  I get it now.  😂

So long Utah Valley Marathon!  You were great (and a bit cruel), and I’ll not be seeing you next year!  😘😘😘 by @diannagraham
