A Catholic priest died Saturday after a large crucifix fell on him while he was leading a livestreamed Mass in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Footage shared on social media shows Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari addressing the congregation before the crucifix fell and struck him in the head. The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed his death Sunday, saying he served as parish priest at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in the city’s Central Vicariate. Sánchez Molinari was a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer and had previously served in Vinces, according to local reports. The cause of the collapse remains unknown.
