Artist spotlight: Paul Robles 💫

Born in the Philippines, Paul Robles is an artist based in Winnipeg, Canada, Treaty One. Recognized for his intricate cut paper works, Robles combines the delicacy associated with traditional hand work that addresses psychological and emotional states ranging from animist familiars, folklore, spirits, trauma, and grief. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (Gold Medal) from University of Manitoba School of Art and Bachelor of Arts degree (Sociology) from The University of Winnipeg. Robles has exhibited widely in Canada, USA, and France. He has participated in Plug In ICA’s Summer Institute Residence Program, and Papier Art Fair, Montreal. He produced an outdoor installation for Nuit Blanche (in Winnipeg & Waterloo, ON) and installed a mural for the Wall-to-Wall Festival in Sept 2021. Robles is a recipient of the King Charles III Coronation Medal for his contributions to Manitoba's art and culture.

Featured artwork: Paul Robles, September Moon (Harvest), 2025-26, cut origami paper and gouache on vellum, 62.2 x 62.2 cm. Image and statement below courtesy of the artist.

"Attending the University of Winnipeg just after high school - the world in a sense-was my 'oyster'. As a young student, I was still discovering my path to walk on. I recall those first years similar to entering into a personal "fairytale" of sorts. Adventures to be had – campus life, academic responsibilities and a duty to become -- a discovery of oneself.

'September Moon' is from a series of 'full moons' made throughout the year – reflecting on personal diaries as well as global tales. Paper cuts intricately imbricated aspects of life, ideals and love of the lunar wonder – looking down upon us. Such ambivalence makes for a particularly interesting fairytale, offering rich ground for interpretation."

Join us October 7 at 2:30 pm in Convocation Hall (second floor of Wesley Hall) @uwinnipeg when Paul discusses his work alongside artists Scott Benesiinaabandan and Leslie Supnet.

🤝 Thanks to @mbartscouncil for making this event possible
