tropical state of mind

A viral Reddit thread titled “We won’t take care of you” is forcing a hard conversation that most families are avoiding.

A growing number of adult children are quietly saying they will not, or simply cannot, be their parents’ hands-on caregivers. It is painful to hear, but it exposes a real demographic collision: families are smaller, kids live scattered across states, and the cost of care is staggering. Here is the math nobody wants to face. Roughly 80% of retirees will eventually need long-term support, and home care or a facility can run anywhere from $75,000 to over $200,000 a year. And the biggest myth of all: Medicare pays $0 for ongoing custodial care, the daily help with bathing, dressing, meals, and dementia supervision that most people actually need.
So the real takeaway is not resentment, it is planning. Build your own “Plan B” before you need it. Understand that Medicaid audits five years of your finances under the “look-back rule,” so never transfer your home or money without a certified elder law attorney. Name a healthcare proxy and power of attorney now. And reframe what you ask of your kids, not time or money, but advocacy: reviewing bills, joining doctor calls, and watching for fraud.
Have you had the kitchen-table conversation yet?

RIP Patrick Stewart (1940-2026)

And I thought it’s going to be a quiet weekend 💀

———-
The 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix erupted into chaos during practice when Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson collided, triggering a red flag and matching grid penalties, while Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar received an FIA warning for a paddock physical altercation with a fan. Compounding the insanity, Haas dropped a massive bombshell on Saturday morning by abruptly sidelining Esteban Ocon for the rest of the weekend. This shock driver swap followed a tense, public radio argument between Ocon and his race engineer, a furious storming of the hospitality unit, and mechanics literally scrubbing Ocon’s name and portrait from the garage façade as reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa was drafted in to replace him. Rounding out the dramatic backdrop, Audi accidentally sent a rookie onto the live track with a massive garage fan still attached to his car, Lewis Hamilton suffered a catastrophic engine blowout, and Colton Herta was agonizingly stripped of his newly earned FIA Super Licence due to a retroactive points correction.

Metafiction!!!!!!!! Docudrama!!!!!! Cinema is most interesting to me when it toes the line between reality and fiction. A lot of interesting films are being released right now (looking at my new goat @lanceopp) so I thought I'd make something to celebrate that.... Watch more documentaries!! Interrogate cinema!!!! Get meta!!!
