This is a starry night view of the western end of the Uinta Highline Trail. It’s only 80 miles from my home in Salt Lake City, Utah, and it’s where I often go for solitude and to connect with nature and the universe. That’s the core of the Milky Way Galaxy directly overhead.

I’m currently listening to the @uintatriangle podcast by @kslcom’s investigative reporter @dave_cawley, known for his popular @thecoldpodcast.

The Uinta Triangle is a remote, rugged wilderness area in Utah’s Uinta Mountains known for swallow-whole disappearances. The term gained prominence through a 9-part true-crime podcast of the same name, hosted by Dave Cawley.

Despite meticulous planning, GPS tracking, and safety gear, Eric Robinson, an experienced 64-year-old solo trekker (High Sierra and Himalayas), failed to emerge at his destination, this very spot.

If you listen to the podcast, I strongly recommend using a good set of stereo headphones as the background sounds Dave recorded in the wild are truly immersive. In fact, Episode 1 Bonus, “Sounds of the Wild,” tells how and why he made these recordings for the podcast. Fascinating stuff!

Even in a camp ground I never let my kid out of my sight in the Uinta’s! Way too many news stories about lost kids running through my mind. I could only relax once he was asleep in the trailer, but then I had to worry about bears.

I live on the eastern side of the uintas and absolutely love it up there. Last summer I hiked 93 miles of the highline trail and saw many places Eric Robinson would have before his accident including the pass he died on.

I've spent a lot of time up in the Uintas, and it never seems to be enough. Like you royce, it's a premier go-to spot for me as well to connect with the universe (literally) and disconnect from the stressors of man made life and the cities. Being out here in the dark, and alone too, is an other worldly experience. The elevation is a huge factor in why the milky way is so stunning out here as well. I often wonder what truly exists here, and does it come out at night? Hasn't stopped me yet though 🤣. I've yet to do a good long back-packer through them and can't wait to do one.

@roycebairphoto You are absolutely right - the solo explorations at night in the wilderness is dangerous and liberating at the same time. I used to wonder is it all worth the risk but then my inner voice says if not now when! Being in a wild place all by myself experiencing nature is just makes it all worth it!
