TO THE NAME BENEATH THE CROWN, 권지용
it's been 9 years since jiyong showed his vulnerable side through his self titled album. i've talked about what this piece means to me many times before, but i feel like a lot is still unsaid — it's just hard to explain something that must be felt instead.
i think this album and tour became kind of a taboo among the fandom, especially when it's appreciated, which i never really understood... the concept behind it is pure rawness and humanness, and i believe art reaches its peak when those are combined. it takes a lot of courage to admit our weaknesses and lows to ourselves, but it takes even more strength to put it out there for everyone to hear. yet, jiyong did it. right before leaving for the military, he stripped off the idol mask and exposed his most vulnerable self to the world — and oh, what a honor it is, as a fan, to see your favorite person trust and be so honest with you.
through a melody, lyrics, and a simple but meaningful concept, kwon ji yong taught me strength and how to accept my honest self. it showed me that there's nothing wrong about opening up, and that perfection is subjective. one of the main messages from this era that sticks with me until this day is: slow down; take your time if you need to; the world will keep moving without you and that's completely fine. there's something so relieving in the fact that reality doesn't really need me and that inevitable things will happen either way.
i wish more people would realize the beauty in how g-dragon chose to step away for a moment and gave kwon jiyong a voice instead. how real, even if painful, it felt seeing his struggles. despite his doubts, jiyong trusted that we'd stay after seeing his real self... little does he know that it only made me love and admire him even more, both as a person and artist.
kwon ji yong will forever be a fundamental piece about gd's career and life. it was a stepping stone that let him grow, accept himself beyond the public eye, and get closer to his idea of übermensch. 9 years later, it's thanks to this album that we can appreciate the happier and healthier jiyong we have today. i'm proud of him ♥️
