Are we worth it? ARE worth the money: - Giant women - Fancy little food items - "Shorties" (anyone under 6'8/200cm) - Clothes that fit - Creative practice - First class travel - Drag Queens - Clown school of any kind - Buy things from small businesses - highly durable military-grade purse NOT worth the money: - Nice but uncomfortable shoes - The world's most expensive cities - Most vegan restaurants - Pure bred pets - Colorless fancy gyms or other exclusive clubs where to purely flex ego - Gas - Most shortcuts
Tomorrow, October 13th, Eltie Takes the Lead: A Guide Dog’s Tail arrives in bookstores! 🐾 Illustrator: @ziyuechen Three years ago, I started writing a children’s book from the perspective of the one who knows my daily life best: my guide dog, Eltie. In the book, Eltie walks kids through a day in his life, showing how he helps me get where I need to go, what his job really looks like, and why I, as a blind person, rely on him. Kids also learn how to recognize a service dog and how (and how not) to interact with a working dog out in the world. My goal was for blind kids to see themselves in this book, and for sighted kids to enjoy learning about something that might feel unfamiliar or even a little scary at first. I hoped hearing it from a dog would make it feel safe, comforting, and fun! Accessibility was at the heart of every decision. The hardcover includes tactile images on select pages, including one with tactile braille, so kids can experience the story with their hands as well as their eyes. I also narrated the audiobook myself, which was honestly nerve-wracking. Stepping into Eltie’s voice felt like a big responsibility, and I hope I made him proud! None of this would be complete without the incredible artwork of Ziyue Chen, a deeply talented Deaf artist who brought Eltie to life with so much warmth and personality. I can’t see her illustrations myself, but hearing everyone’s reactions has been amazing. The cover of the book is here and I will be sharing some of my favorite pages tomorrow. I just got back from visiting my 14-month-old niece in France, and sharing the book with her was a moment I won’t forget. Watching her light up at Eltie made three years of work feel worth it all over again. Thank you to everyone who preordered, shared, and cheered us on! If you pick up the hardcover or audiobook, I hope Eltie finds a special place on your shelf or in your classroom. Accessibility: Illustration of a girl with a red backpack walking along a path at sunset, holding the handle of her black guide dog’s harness. Purple and pink sky, butterflies, and yellow flowers in the foreground.
Last night was a Wonderful night that I’ll treasure forever! Such a fantastic energy in the room and loved every second! I was Absolutely Blown away to be awarded a “2026 National Heroes” Award by @bestmagofficial readers presented by @vanessafeltzofficial - who looked incredible!. Voted for by “Best” readers it means so much to be recognised for my work. It just means the world. And I was able to speak about my incredible team @themaggieoliverfoundation and all the work we do every day to support survivors as we fight to change a truly broken criminal justice system! Official photos will follow but for now here’s just a little snapshot….. There were some truly worthy winners in the room and I met such lovely people and heard many uplifting and inspiring conversations! As I listened to their stories I was reminded that there really ARE many good people in this world - sadly just not our “leaders”. Thankyou @bestmagofficial for this amazing award, and for taking care of me. Thankyou @markmeliadesigns for my beautiful dress! Thankyou Kelly for looking after us! It was made even more special as I was able to share this special night with my son 🩷 @lizziecundy @the_mcgiff @drhilaryjones @vanessafeltzofficial @bestmagofficial @thedebbiemcgee
