When white racists attack and defame Michelle Obama, a Black woman, they are not simply targeting one person. They are invoking slave master mentality, a long and painful history in which Black women were portrayed as less feminine, less beautiful, and less worthy of dignity and respect than their white counterparts.
During slavery and segregation, these stereotypes were used to justify oppression, exploitation, rape, and the denial of a Black women’s humanity. That legacy has not disappeared, it continues whenever people attempt to demean, dehumanize, or mock Black women based on such disgusting racist tropes.
Michelle Obama is not just one woman. She represents the strength, intelligence, resilience, and beauty found in countless Black Mothers, sisters, daughters, nieces, cousins, friends, and neighbors. When she is attacked, all Black women are attacked!
And to those who witness this racist rhetoric and choose to stay silence: WE SEE YOU! “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing!”, WE SEE YOU!
