Popped back up to see the finished sculptures this afternoon.

All absolutely fabulous.

Unfortunately for me the carvers had gone off on a shopping trip. I did have a lovely chat with one of their hosts though.

I'm looking forward to seeing them installed in their final home.

Rumours that I may also have brought home three more pieces of their offcuts to turn into something have not been greatly exaggerated.

There is A LOT of crying at TACA. 💔 Not just tears of relief from finally feeling SEEN. But tears of REALIZATION. GRIEF. ANGER, and the heartbreaking realization of just how much our children have been medically failed. Imagine spending YEARS hearing “it’s just autism,” “it’s behavioral,” or “there’s nothing more we can do”… Only to attend a conference where physicians and researchers are discussing neuroinflammation, immune dysfunction, gastrointestinal disorders, metabolic abnormalities, cerebral folate deficiency, PANS/PANDAS, and other medical conditions that can coexist with autism, and are untreated behind an autism label. Conditions families have spent YEARS begging someone to investigate, and that’s when the tears come. You start replaying every appointment. Every dismissal. Every time your child suffered while you were made to question your own instincts. There is a particular kind of grief in realizing your child may not have received the medical attention they deserved. And an even harder realization? The medical system is often not equipped to care for the very children who need complex medical care the MOST. THIS is the MEDICAL ABANDONMENT so many families are talking about. Not every autistic child has these conditions. But an autism diagnosis should NEVER become an excuse to stop investigating pain, illness, regression, or unexplained symptoms. This was my THIRD @tacanow conference, and watching first-time moms process everything brought me right back to my first. The heartbreak of what you didn’t know. The anger over what was dismissed. The grief over time you cannot get back. And then, the HOPE that comes with knowledge. ❤️ I asked these mothers how they felt after their first TACA conference. Their answers speak volumes. We should NOT have to become medical detectives just to convince professionals that our children’s suffering deserves investigation. Our children deserved better than medical dismissal.
