The Asiatic male lion (Panthera leo persica) is found exclusively in and around the Gir Forest landscape of Gujarat, India. Compared to African lions, Asiatic males are generally slightly smaller, have a distinctive fold of skin running along their belly, and usually possess a shorter, less dense mane that often leaves their ears visible. Adult males typically weigh between 160 and 190 kg and play a vital role in defending their territory and pride from rival males. As apex predators, they help maintain the balance of the ecosystem by regulating populations of herbivores such as deer, antelope, and wild boar. Thanks to dedicated conservation efforts, the Asiatic lion population has recovered remarkably, making it one of India’s greatest wildlife conservation success stories.
