What happens when the world changes faster than our understanding of it?
Walking through Facing Modernity: Degas to Picasso at SAM, I thought about these artists grappling with this question over a century ago.
Photography, electricity, industry and psychology were reshaping society. The old ways of seeing no longer felt enough.
Standing in the gallery, I couldn’t help thinking about today.
AI. Climate. Biotechnology.
Another moment where the ground beneath us feels like it’s shifting.
Perhaps the role of artists and designers has never really changed.
To help us navigate and understand what it feels like to live through change.
