WHEN I GROW UP Oh, little cowgirl me. If only I could reach back and give you the biggest hug. I wish I could tell you about the life waiting for you. The dreams you’ll make real, the love you’ll find, the places you’ll go. I wonder if you’d believe me. A little girl from the Midwest, where being different wasn’t always easy. I remember how painfully shy you were. Your inner world so much louder than your voice. So much to say, but never quite finding the courage to say it. And then you found dance. A way to express everything you couldn’t put into words. A place where you could be bold, even when the rest of the world felt intimidating. When I was little, I never dreamed of being famous, being a star or having groupies. I dreamed of becoming Miss Dance. I prayed to the stars every single night. And when that dream came true, something shifted. I began to believe in the power of my own dreams. That belief, and the curiosity to discover what else might be possible, took me further than I could ever have imagined. Through love, heartbreak, mistakes and extraordinary experiences, I slowly learned to understand myself. To have compassion for that shy little girl. And eventually, to find my voice. These pictures now appear in our show during When I Grow Up, alongside children’s laughter and Banksy’s red balloon of hope. And I love how differently I understand those words now. Growing up was never just about who I dreamed of becoming. It was about learning to love who I had been all along. You deserved to feel safe, loved and accepted long before you achieved a single thing. I can’t go back and give you everything you needed, little one. But I get to love you now. And maybe that’s something we can all learn as we grow. To look back at the little people we once were with a little more understanding, kindness and love. ❤️

Thank you to everyone who is a part of the KEXP community. We have built something that is made of hope, empathy, kindness, art, music, freedom of expression and community. Right now that might feel in short supply, but it is not. We are out there, we are tired of this darkness and this hate. We see what the billionaires and corporations are doing to our freedoms to be ourselves and to express ourselves. We see how the people follow them to this destructive place. We must continue to hold each other, care for each other and forgive each other. Support music and support art, it is the voice of the voiceless. It is the language of hope and of rebellion. If you make art, keep making it. If you don’t, start. I had a front row seat to it all week and we blew past any number or challenge put in front of us because of this community. We are not alone. Don’t give up.
