Join us for a festival of Brazilian music covering samba’s unique emergence, bossa nova’s urban romanticism, the political urgency of MPB, and tropicalismo’s effort to redefine Brazilian cultural identity. We’ll trace the tumultuous decades that shaped Brazil’s modernity and its global soft power. Why did bossa nova collapse in 1964, only to be reborn? What sparked the 1967 “march against the electric guitar”? Why is Brazil the only country with an official sound effect? We’ll address these questions and examine how Brazil became an unlikely cultural force over the 20th century.

Abhinav is best known as the guitarist for the acclaimed Indian indie rock band The F16s, but has played guitar for any band of note emerging from the city of Chennai. In recent years, he has developed a reputation as a music critic and interviewer, working with Vogue magazine and Lollapalooza among others.
