God gives his most beautifully deranged album covers to his prettiest most brazen boys 🍒

Skinny dipping with @thef16s had us touching dimensions within ourselves most people spend lifetimes avoiding & I remember all of us looking at this photograph @prayoonsajeev perfectly captured and unanimously going “album cover” 🤽🏽‍♂️🏆

A little rewind to Side A / Side B: Sounds of Brazil

From the rhythms of samba and the intimacy of bossa nova to the political spirit of MPB and the experimentation of tropicalismo, we spent the evening tracing the sounds, stories and cultural moments that shaped Brazil’s remarkable musical history.

Guiding us through it all were Booby K, guitarist of The F16s, music critic and interviewer, alongside writer Satyavrat KK.

A night of records, stories, discoveries and some very good listening at Bar Cameo. by @boobyk

This Thursday, we’re spinning Geese’s 3D Country (2023) in full on vinyl. A weird, loose, infectiously fun album for us to sink our teeth into.

Shoutout to our friend @boobyk for hosting this one 🪿

Please note: This edition of After Hours is RSVP only. With limited space in the store, we may not be able to accommodate anyone without a confirmed RSVP.

Join us for a festival of Brazilian music covering samba’s unique emergence, bossa nova’s urban romanticism, the political urgency of MPB, and tropicalismo’s effort to redefine Brazilian cultural identity. We’ll trace the tumultuous decades that shaped Brazil’s modernity and its global soft power. Why did bossa nova collapse in 1964, only to be reborn? What sparked the 1967 “march against the electric guitar”? Why is Brazil the only country with an official sound effect? We’ll address these questions and examine how Brazil became an unlikely cultural force over the 20th century.

Abhinav is best known as the guitarist for the acclaimed Indian indie rock band The F16s, but has played guitar for any band of note emerging from the city of Chennai. In recent years, he has developed a reputation as a music critic and interviewer, working with Vogue magazine and Lollapalooza among others.

@satyavratkk writes for publications like South Parade, Himal Southasian, ASAP Connect and others when he gets some time off from his day job organizing students in the SUNY (State University of New York) system. taken in Bangalore, India by @boobyk

Took my time with this but finally reviewed the new @karshninair album
'BUCK WILD' - a harsh amalgam of stark lyricism and a sonic tapestry of glass shards.

And I loved it.

Features by @circle_tone @discopuppet and @threeoscillators

If we're doing numbers then this is a solid 4.5/5
What should I review next?

Our very first listening session ever happened on Record Store Day 2022.

We had no real idea how to host an event back then. We used a Google Form for entries. Because it was RSD, we decided to take a leap and host two sessions, both rooted in neo-soul. We began with D’Angelo’s Voodoo, then reshuffled the entire room and everyone in it for Session Two, Cleo Sol’s Rose in the Dark.

That evening was full of firsts.
First time hosting.
First time speaking to a room full of people about an album we truly loved.
First time trusting our curation in front of a room.
First time feeling the nerves that come with putting something you truly believe in out into the world.

The people who showed up that day didn’t just attend a session. Many of them became friends, and they’re still part of our lives and this space today. @boobyk joined us as an attendee in 2022. This time, he’s sitting beside us as a co-host.

That evening allowed us to exist three-dimensionally as a record store. It gave us confidence in our taste, and more importantly, the courage to stay true to our vision. We may take some of this for granted now, but back then, every small decision felt huge.

Revisiting this session to celebrate D’Angelo is emotional for more than one reason. D’Angelo gave us strength before we knew we needed it. This session is a thank you, a return, a full-circle moment, and a celebration.

Join us as we host D’Angelo one more time to remember his legacy.
With love and gratitude.
