The strain doesn't stop at the joints, either. Extra abdominal weight shifts the body's center of gravity forward, straining the muscles and discs of the lower back and altering posture and gait. There's also a chemical dimension, as fat tissue releases inflammatory signals that can further accelerate joint breakdown beyond mechanical wear alone.
